We thought we'd show you a few more pics of our lovely b&b (recommended by Bridget & Demian). This is our view at breakfast. And below are a few of the regular visitors. The kookaburras like meat, so our hosts keep some pieces of lamb heart (yum) for them to come in and grab. Then they like to take it and beat it against the tree limb as if they've just caught a snake and are killing it.

There is also a regular parade of ants that Matt had fun capturing with his macro lens.

On the 13th we went to the Rainforest Habitat in Port Douglas. Pretty much a zoo, but very nice to be able to see all the birds and such much closer than you can see them in the jungle (if they're even there as we were to experience later in the week...).

So, we got to see a nice big croc safely behind bars. :) Check out those teeth!

We also saw lots of great birds. The one below is the cassowary which is endangered, but very important to the Australian rain forest ecology. When you're driving around, they have lots of signs that tell you to watch for them and you're supposed to report if you see any.

Matt tried to make friends with a few birds, but Lisa did a bit better. :-)

We could try to name them all, but we'd get them wrong...

They also had a few koalas (we hope to see some more awake when we're down south in Adelaide) and a bunch of kangaroos that you could feed (unsupervised actually! Very different from the US.)

Next we explore the local economy and go further up into the rainforest...
